Equine Pilates - Pilates for Horse Riders

Your horse can only move as well as you allow them to. Your asymmetries become theirs. Your tension transfers through the reins and saddle. Your balance - or lack of it - affects their movement with every stride.

Equine Pilates addresses the rider, improving your balance, symmetry, core strength, and body awareness to transform your partnership with your horse.

Why Pilates for Riders?

The Uncomfortable Truth:

Most riders spend hours training their horses while neglecting their own bodies. We expect our horses to be supple, balanced, and responsive, yet we bring:

  • Collapsed hips and asymmetric sitting

  • Hollow backs and tight shoulders

  • Weak cores that can't absorb movement

  • Stiffness that restricts following the horse's motion

  • Tension that transfers through the reins

  • Poor breathing that affects our relaxation

Your horse feels all of this.

Equine Pilates transforms you into a rider who:

✓ Sits balanced and centered in the saddle
✓ Moves symmetrically, allowing your horse to do the same
✓ Absorbs movement fluidly through a strong, supple core
✓ Maintains correct alignment without effort or tension
✓ Delivers clear, subtle aids your horse can easily understand
✓ Stays relaxed and breathing properly, helping your horse relax too
✓ Rides with confidence and body awareness

My Equestrian Background

Why I'm Qualified to Teach Riders:

I was a competitive show jumper in my youth, and horses remain one of my passions to this day. I understand the unique demands of riding - the strength, balance, flexibility, and mental focus required.

My passion for helping riders work in harmony with their horses led me to complete specialized Body Control Pilates training for Equestrians, adding to my existing Pilates qualifications.

I understand:

  • The specific muscle groups riders need to strengthen

  • Common asymmetries and postural issues in riders

  • How rider tension and position affects the horse

  • The physical demands of different disciplines

  • The importance of injury prevention in a high-risk sport

  • The mental focus required for competitive riding

I teach riders as a rider - not just as a Pilates instructor, but as someone who understands horses and the rider/horse partnership intimately.

What You'll Work On

Key Areas for Riders:

1. Core Stability

Your core is your powerhouse in the saddle. A strong, stable core:

  • Keeps you balanced over your horse's center of gravity

  • Absorbs the horse's movement without gripping or bouncing

  • Allows independent hand and leg aids

  • Prevents your position from collapsing

  • Protects your back from injury

2. Pelvic Awareness & Control

Your pelvis is your primary connection to your horse. We'll work on:

  • Finding neutral pelvis (not tipped forward or back)

  • Independent movement of the hip joints

  • Absorbing movement through the pelvis fluidly

  • Following the horse's back movement

  • Preventing locked or rigid hips

3. Spinal Mobility & Alignment

A supple spine allows you to move with your horse. You'll develop:

  • Thoracic mobility for following movement

  • Spinal extension to prevent rounding/collapsing

  • Rotation ability for accurate turns

  • The strength to maintain alignment without stiffness

  • Safe, resilient movement patterns

4. Shoulder Stability & Softness

Tense shoulders create tense horses. We'll work on:

  • Shoulder blade stability for steady hands

  • Releasing tension in neck and shoulders

  • Independent arm movement from stable shoulder girdle

  • Soft, following rein contact

  • Upper body balance

5. Balance & Symmetry

Most riders are naturally asymmetric - stronger/more flexible on one side. We'll address:

  • Left/right imbalances

  • One-sided stiffness or weakness

  • Collapsed hip tendencies

  • Uneven weight distribution

  • Lateral balance exercises

6. Leg Position & Strength

Long, stable leg position requires specific strength. You'll build:

  • Hip flexor flexibility for long leg

  • Inner thigh strength without gripping

  • Calf and ankle stability

  • Independent leg movement

  • Ability to maintain position without tension

7. Breathing & Relaxation

Tense riders create tense horses. We'll practice:

  • Proper breathing that doesn't interfere with position

  • Using breath to release tension

  • Staying relaxed under pressure

  • Transferring calmness to your horse

The Connection to Your Riding

How Pilates Translates to the Saddle:

Bridge Work → Strengthens glutes and hamstrings for secure seat
Pelvic Tilts → Develops awareness of neutral pelvis in saddle
Cat/Cow → Improves ability to follow horse's back movement
Oblique Work → Stronger lateral stability for turns and circles
Shoulder Stabilization → Steadier hands and softer rein contact
Balance Exercises → Better stability in saddle, especially over fences
Hip Flexor Stretches → Longer, more secure leg position
Spinal Rotation → Better bend and accuracy through corners
Core Integration → Independent aids - hands/legs working separately
