Tops: T-shirt, vest, or fitted top
Layers: A sweatshirt or cardigan for the warm-up/cool-down

Absolutely not! Joseph Pilates himself was a man and originally designed the Pilates method - which he called 'Contrology' - for gymnasts and boxers. Pilates is beneficial for everyone, regardless of gender. I have male clients ranging from office workers to equestrians to those recovering from injury.

Which Class Is Right For me?

Your first pilates class will be welcoming and non-intimidating. We work in small groups which means plenty of individual attention and hands-on corrections to ensure you're performing exercises safely and effectively. You'll learn:
The basic principles of Pilates movement
How to engage your core properly
Fundamental exercises that form the foundation of your practice
How to listen to your body and work at your own pace
Many clients searching for "pilates classes for beginners UK" are concerned about fitness levels - don't worry! Pilates is completely adaptable, and I'll modify exercises to suit your current abilities.
-
If you're looking for beginner pilates classes in the Skipton area, you're in the right place!
Unless I’m running specific beginner classes, I recommend booking an initial one-to-one assessment (£57 for 60 minutess) where I can:
Assess your posture and movement patterns
Discuss any injuries, conditions, or specific goals
Introduce you to the fundamental Pilates principles
Create a personalised plan for your pilates journey
After your assessment, you'll be placed in the correct level class.
-
If you've practiced pilates regularly elsewhere, you'll likely join an Improvers or Intermediate level class. During your initial assessment, I'll discuss your pilates experience and recommend the most appropriate class level.
Intermediate pilates classes in Skipton include:
More complex movement patterns and sequences
Increased challenge and variety
Focus on refinement and precision
Integration of equipment like foam rollers and resistance bands
HIPP pilates option for high-intensity training
-
Mat Pilates is performed on the floor using your body weight for resistance. It's excellent for:
Learning fundamental movement patterns
Developing core strength and stability
Improving flexibility and body awareness
Working in a group class environment
Budget-friendly introduction to Pilates
Reformer Pilates uses a specialised piece of equipment with springs for resistance. It offers:
Variable resistance levels for different exercises
Support for those with limited mobility
More dynamic, flowing movements
Faster strength gains for some people
One-to-one focused attention
Both mat pilates and reformer pilates follow the same fundamental principles. Many clients start with mat pilates classes to learn the basics, then progress to reformer sessions for variety or more intensive training.

Balanced, controlled movement
All exercises can be adapted, making matwork suitable for beginners through to advanced clients.

Studio or Apparatus Pilates uses specialized equipment—like the Reformer, Wunda Chair, and Cadillac—as an integrated system to guide, challenge, and support your movement. Unlike mat work alone, the apparatus provides resistance, assistance, and feedback, helping you build strength, improve posture, and move with greater control.
Rachel tailors each class to your body, adjusting springs and selecting apparatus to suit your needs. Whether you’re recovering from injury, looking for a dynamic workout, or aiming to master mat exercises, apparatus Pilates offers a safe, progressive, and highly personalized approach for all levels. Small class sizes ensure focused guidance, and the variety of equipment keeps sessions fun, engaging, and effective.
-
Reformer Pilates uses a specialised spring-based apparatus to add resistance and support. It offers:
Increased strength and muscle tone
Greater range of movement
Supportive options for injury or rehabilitation
Progressive challenge for experienced movers
Reformer sessions are ideal for clients wanting a more dynamic workout or tailored therapeutic support.
-
HIPP combines classical Pilates principles with higher-intensity, faster-paced sequences. It is designed to:
Boost cardiovascular fitness
Improve stamina and power
Build strength without high impact
Maintain alignment and control
HIPP is suitable for clients with a solid Pilates foundation who are looking for a more energetic workout while staying joint-friendly and low-impact.
-
Foam Roller Pilates incorporates the roller to challenge balance, release tension and deepen core activation. Benefits include:
Myofascial release and muscle relaxation
Improved postural awareness
Enhanced stability and coordination
Gentle spinal mobility work
It can be soothing and restorative or more challenging depending on the exercises selected.
